Brief History of NULGE

The National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) is a trade union representing and protecting the interest of local government workers in Nigeria.

The union was founded in 1978 when the then military government merged over one thousand unions in the country following the report of Commission of Inquiry set up by Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo in 1976 to look into the activities of trade unionism the country.

Following the report of the Commission of Inquiry, Gen. Obasanjo reduced over one thousand unions to forty-two unions. Consequently, the Nigeria Union of Local Authority Staff (NULAS) joined other ten unions to form what is today known as NULGE.

NULGE IN ONDO STATE

Subsequent upon the restructuring of trade unions in Nigeria by the military government in 1978, the name Nigeria Union of Local Government Staff (NULAS) ceased to exist following the formation of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and the Ondo district of the union therefore became the state branch of NULGE with the headquarters in Lagos.

A Working Committee was set up to organize the first State Triennial Delegates Conference in Akure on 2nd August 1978.

The following officers were elected:

  • Mr. Awelewa Aina – State President
  • Mr. Felix V. O – State Vice President
  • Mr. C.A. Ogunsina – State Treasurer
  • Mr. M.A. Ogunsusi – Trustee
  • Mr. J.O. Adekogba – Internal Auditor

The second State Triennial Delegates Conference was also held in Akure under the supervision of the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the following officers were elected:

  1. Mr. Awelewa Aina – State President
  2. Mr. F.V.O. Giwa – State Vice President
  3. Mr. C.A. Ogusina – State Treasurer
  4. Mr. F.O. Akinmuyisitan – Publicity Secretary
  5. Mr. J.O. Adekogba – Internal Auditor
  6. Chief F.A.E. Adejare – Internal Auditor
  7. Mr. Olaolu Ajayi – Trustee
  8. Mr. Femi Alewi -Trustee
  9. Mr. G.S. Adeleye – Trustee

The second Triennial National Delegates Conference of NULGE was held in Jos, Plateau State Capital on the 1st February, 1985 where Mr. Awelewa Aina was unanimously elected as one of the three national vice presidents of the union.


Mr. Akinmuyisitan took over from Pa Aina in 1986 and led the union till when he retired from the Local Government Service 1987. He was later appointed to the commission as commissioner representing NULGE.


Pa Akinmuyisitan was succeeded by an Environmentalist, Comrade Toba E. Bogundo in 1987 and was in charge till 1992 when he retired and also appointed as commissioner in the Local Government Service Commission.


Mr. Alaba Ola lsijola was elected State President of the union in 1992 in a keenly contested election and his election marked the beginning of transformation of the union in Ondo state. Other elected officers who served with him include:-

  • Mr. J.O. Osunleye – State Vice-Chairman
  • Mr. Dele Ajayi – State Treasurer
  • Mr. J. A. Faluyi – 1st Auditor
  • Mr. A. O. Adejoro – 2nd Auditor
  • Mrs. F. O. Ajibulu – 1st Trustee.
  • Mr. O. Ojo – 2nd Trustee.
  • Mr. Olayiwola Jegede – Publicity Secretary

Following his outstanding performance in office, Alaba lsijola was re­elected as the state president for 2nd term in 1995 alongside the following officers:-

  • Engr. Wole Ogunwolere – State Vice President
  • Mr. Segun Onaade – Treasurer
  • Mr. B. J. Lawani – 1st Auditor
  • Mr. Johnson Adeoyin – 2nd Auditor
  • Mrs. F. O. Ajibulu – 1st Trustee.
  • Chief (Mrs V. O. Smart (JP) – 2nd Trusee
  • Chief Bunmi Eniayewu – Publicity Secretary

After the creation of Ekiti State in 1996, Comrade Alaba lsijola was appointed Director-General in the state civil service, consequently, the Vice President, Engr. Dele 0gunwolere became the Acting President in accordance with the constitution of the union. It was later resolved by the State Executive Council of the union to conduct bye-election to fill three vacant positions, State President, Treasurer and 1st Trustee.

The bye-election was conducted on the 15th of July 1997 and the following members were elected:

  • Mr. 0lugbenga Jegede – State President
  • Mr. GokeAkinyele -Vice President
  • Mr. B. J. Lawani – Treasurer
  • Mr. Ademoyegun Ayowole – 2nd Auditor
  • Mr. Tunde Monehin – 2nd Trustee.

Comrade Tun de Monehin succeeded Comrade Gbenga Jegede on 18m July 2000 with the following officers:-

  • Engr. Ayo Omoregie – Vice-President
  • Mr. T. A. Sakara – Treasurer
  • Mr. Femi 0gundiminiyi – 1st Auditor
  • Mr. Olawole S. Jepson – 2nd Auditor
  • Mrs. K. A. Akingbola – 1st Trustee.
  • Mr. Olumide Aguda – 2nd Trustee.
  • Mr. Bunmi Falodun – Publicity Secretary
